Native American Heritage Month 2021: Land Ackowledgement

Library Resources for the observance of Native American Heritage Month at Waubonsee Community College

The Waubonsee Community College Libraries respectfully acknowledge the Native Nations that have inhabited this land for centuries. The college's four campuses are located on the ancestral territories of the Kiikaapoi (Kickapoo)PeoriaKaskaskiaBodéwadmiakiwen (Potawatomi)MyaamiaHoocąk (Ho-Chunk), and Očhéthi Šakówiŋ (Oceti Sakowin Oyate) -- the Seven Council Fires Confederation. Federal and state governments repeatedly sought to forcibly remove the First Nations of Illinois from their unceded homelands. We recognize that settler methods of commemoration do not tell the whole or only story.

This statement is merely a starting point as we continue to commit to an ongoing respect of the Indigenous elders both past and present. Moreover, we seek to build authentic relationships with First Nations Communities in our own discovery and education regarding Indigenous cultures.
