Black History Month: Celebrate!

National Black History Month (also known as African American History Month) in February celebrates and recognizes the impact, experiences, and culture of African Americans/Black Americans. For more information on the history and evolution of this event, visit African American History Month - Library of Congress.

"National African American History Month had its origins in 1915 when historian and author Dr. Carter G. Woodson founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History...The celebration was expanded to a month in 1976, the nation’s bicentennial. President Gerald R. Ford urged Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

This guide is also highlighting titles that showcase the Association for the Study of African American Life & History Black History Month 2025 Theme:  African Americans and Labor, as well as titles promoted for The National African American Month Read-In, the nation’s first and oldest event dedicated to diversity in literature established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month.

A Note on Subject Headings

Subject headings are only one way to search our library catalog and are a type of controlled vocabulary. While controlled vocabularies can aid in describing and searching for information, it is important to note that subject headings are often incomplete, incorrect, and even offensive and/or downright harmful towards the peoples, concepts, and topics that they represent. Search terms are always subjective and only portray one perspective. Keep this in mind as you search for resources.
